My current view of myself as an artist now has more to do with the pursuit of what I feel is a sublime state, yet a state that envelops the desire to grasp beauty as an ephemeral fog. I want an open ended stance that allows me free range in the quest for this pursuit. I seek to gauge quality by my gut response to my art work; by asking the question; ‘How does this make me feel? How close to being alive does this thing I am making actually me feel? I want my art to come to life not only as I am making it, but to hold my interest afterwards. The point at which the art itself says to me, “I am here, I am me.”, is the point at which I am learning to step away and leave it be, because what I have made has achieved that sublime state of selfness.
I begin a piece by having a map of sensations, ideas and mental colour charts. Because of such an exposure to the art world growing up I tend to look to outside sources for my inspiration. Such as my love of Jazz music, the music of Nina Simone and my love of exotic food. My actions in painting are all very deliberately done, even when a colour or line may appear very haphazard. I know a painting is done when I am pulled away with new idea or direction that needs a fresh canvas to grow on. My recent work has been abstract paintings that have been derived from both nature and from abstract sensations of movement. The atmosphere of a single colour or shape and how a sensitive change in colour can make a natural colour look very man-made continues to impresses me. Layering of transparent colour and using tools to pull the paint are techniques I am using. Also I am letting my drawing line become free from conscious thought and take on a meandering course and this is juxtaposed against heavy piles, pulls and pools of colour. Once painted, they aim to be affecting vistas of colour and studies on beauty and truth.
